Iris J. Meltzer, MA, MPH holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan (1972), A Master’s degree in psychology from Western Carolina University (1975), and a Master’s of Public Health degree from Kent State University (2002).

After a few years working in both outpatient and inpatient psychiatric settings, Ms. Meltzer served as a founding mother and executive Director of WomanShelter, Portage County’s first shelter for battered women and their children (1980-1984.) From 1984 until her retirement in 2011, she worked in the field of adolescent health at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Ms. Meltzer has published in the fields of public health and adolescent heath and has presented on adolescent risk-taking behavior, comprehensive prevention programming, networking, health disparities, and community health planning to national professional organizations.

She recognized as a Woman of Professional Excellence (1999), a Woman of Distinction at the 100th Anniversary of the YWCA of Summit Co., in 2001, and received the Service to Mankind Award from the Akron Sertoma Club, in June 2003. She also received the President’s Social Responsibility Award from Kent State University in 2005, the Pinwheels for Prevention, Child Abuse/Family Awareness Month in 2007; and the CEOMPH Award for Public Health Practice Excellence, Community Faculty Award in 2009.

Ms. Meltzer has taken an active community service role since 1976 when serving as a board member for a child protection organization in Asheville, NC. Somewhat more ore recently, she has held leadership positions on the boards of Planned Parenthood of Northeast Ohio, the YWCA of Summit County and the Summit County Community Partnership. Since retiring, she has served or serves on the boards of the Kent Environmental Council, the Foundation Board of the Kent Free Library, the Portage County Combined General Health District’s District Advisory Council, and the Portage County Mental Health and Recovery Board. She is serving her second term as President of the League of Women Voters - Kent.

Ms. Meltzer has lived in Kent for 38 years and is the mother of an adult daughter.
