Abstract

  1. The collection Encrypted by Anastasiya Akhundova looks to the acceptance of merging technology and fashion together as the research problem. Technology needs to play a bigger role in fashion’s future to aid in advances for both design and the human body. The designer proposes that if elements of connectivity are incorporated between wearable technology, the wearer and society, then the idea of wearable technology will cease to be daunting in the future.
  2. The designer focused on exploring ways of connection and arrived at QR codes. By being physically attached to garments, the codes provide a new function to fashion. This way, smartphones can scan the clothing and interact with the wearer in a new way. Throughout recent history, many top brands such as Google for the Google Glass and Levi’s Project Jacquard, have pushed these boundaries, but the market has yet to accept these pieces into the mainstream. Reasons for this included lack of aesthetic in the design of the products as well as a discomfort for wearers moving too fast with the technology.
  3. Fashion is psychologically meant to have an emotional tie to the wearer, so I added customization through laser cut prints and temperature-sensitive inks, helping link the garments on an emotional level. With my collection, there is interactivity between the wearer and the public through the sharing of selected digital information. The ease of style and customization helps make the clothing feel nostalgic and less foreign, while connecting the fashion to a familiar tool, the cell phone.
  4. The combination of QR codes and customized garments provides a push for wearable technology to emerge in fashion’s future.

Modified Abstract

The design collection Encrypted by Anastasiya Akhundova looks to the acceptance of merging technology and fashion together as the research problem. Technology needs to play a bigger role in fashion’s future to aid in advances for both clothing design and the human body. The designer proposes that if elements of connectivity between wearable technology, the wearer and society are incorporated, then the idea of wearable technology will cease to be daunting to wearers in the future. The designer introduced this concept through QR codes attached to the collection, adding a new function to the garments. Elements of customization through laser cut prints and temperature-sensitive inks also help keep the wearer linked with the garment on an emotional level. QR codes are incorporated so that smartphones, currently the most prevalent piece of technology used by consumers, to be able to scan the clothing and interact with the wearer in a new way.
