Abstract	A literary criticism of the books "The Naked and the Dead," by Norman Mailer and "For Whom the Bell Tolls," by Ernest Hemingway is presented. It explores how both 20th century American writers used nostalgia as a literary technique in their books. In both books, nostalgia was used to help readers contextualize or understand the narratives
