The use of X-ray analysis in determining the crystal structure in Φ-Bi8Pb5O17

Bismuth lead oxide, Bi8Pb5O17, consists of three polymorphs. The BCC β-Bi8Pb5O17 is unstable below 590°C and is transformed to tetragonal β2-Bi8Pb5O17 on cooling. The tetragonal β2-Bi8Pb5O17 reverts irreversibly to Φ-Bi8Pb5O17 phase at 470°C. This paper focuses on the phases present in Φ-Bi8Pb5O17, using room-temperature X-ray powder diffraction in combination with a profile-fitting technique. The following phases were found in the Φ-Bi8Pb5O17: a triclinic compound, tetragonal Pb3O4, and monoclinic Pb12O19.
