The mixture of Black Letter and Roman type of the title page for Mr. Brown’s Letters shows the influence of the British publisher, William Pickering (1796-1854). The Pickering influence on Rogers resulted from preferences of both Houghton and Mifflin, who saw Pickering as an ideal model for publishing. Rogers was very open about the amount of influence that other designers had on him.
